Oh Deer. Not Again!

Yesterday, Gregg and I went up North to Holbrook to pick up GGMa for the holidays. It is about a 4 hour trip one way from our house. We had been having some rainy weather here in Phoenix and were a bit concerned about the snowy weather in the high country. But, we checked the weather channel and decided it would be okay. It was a "turn around" trip with a 2 hour stay at GGMa's. Now, Gregg and I lived in Flagstaff for about 8 years and have made the trip up to Holbrook area about 10,000 times (give or take 3) and NEVER EVER have we seen a deer anywhere near the freeways. Not grazing, not running, not anything. Until yesterday. Now, keep in mind that just this past August, while I was driving, a deer decided to race our car across the road...and the deer lost. We totaled our car, but we were blessed enough to not be hurt. Well, yesterday Gregg was driving because I had started out the day with a migraine. We were east of Flagstaff and I had just started to feel better, so I was sitting up checking out the scenery. We were in the lane closest to the center stripe and out of the corner of my eye on my right I caught sight of another deer! My mind was a bit muddled from the headache and I found myself at a loss for words---until I saw the deer start to charge across the highway. All I could do was yell, "DEER, DEER, DEER"! Poor Gregg. He slammed on the brakes just as the deer ran across in front of us! All I could do was cry! Not sure why, but it just seemed to be the thing to do.
We have a son-in-law that goes deer hunting whenever he can. He buys the guns, the tents, the camouflage gear and he tromps around in the snow for days to be able to get a deer. I have now told him all he has to do is take our car. The deer will flock to him and he will have his pick! I pray I have seen my last deer trying to race us across the highway! I am just thankful he beat us this time!
